Self‑Defence Classes in Bristol
If you’re searching for self‑defence classes in Bristol that prepare you for real‑world threats—not just theory—you’ve found the right place. At Bristol Titans, we teach Krav Maga, a full‑contact, pressure‑tested system used around the world for its effectiveness in real violence scenarios.
Training here means learning how to strike, grapple, manage weapons threats, and handle multiple attackers under stress. We don’t skip the uncomfortable parts—because in real life, those are the ones that matter.
Why We Train This Way
Having trained in martial arts since the 1980s, competed in MMA, worked the doors, and instructed in several systems, I saw the same problems repeated across styles. While many techniques worked in the gym, they often left out essential realities: multiple attackers, aggressive intent, improvised weapons, and chaos.
Too many clubs sidestep these uncomfortable areas. But if you want practical self‑defence, this is where the focus needs to be. That’s why we pull proven methods from Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, and grappling—and pressure test them so you can trust they work.
I understand some people train for tradition, fitness, or form. That’s fine. But here, the goal is functional self‑defence for real‑world problems.
What You’ll Train
We start by helping you recognise and avoid threats, then we get to work on building useful physical skills. That includes striking, clinch work, groundwork, and dealing with weapons or multiple attackers.
This is physical training. You’ll be on your feet, working with partners, and learning how to control situations under pressure. It’s scaled to your level, and nobody is thrown in at the deep end.
Core Areas of Training:
- Striking
- Grappling
- Weapons
- Multiple opponents
“Regardless of age, gender or size, the team makes you feel welcome and helps you become the best version of yourself.” — Beáta Gráczer
What to Expect in a Class
Classes run for 60–90 minutes. After a warm‑up, we move into technique development and partner work. Some sessions include sparring or grappling. Others use pressure drills or scenario-based training. You’ll always be given space to train at your own pace.
“Jim explains technique clearly, always realistic, and there’s a great spirit in the club. Tough but fun.” — Geoff Harris
“Three months in, I stopped flinching at punches. Six months in, I walked with more confidence — even my girlfriend noticed.” — Nick Green
Why Krav Maga
This isn’t a hybrid or adaptation—it is Krav Maga. Originally developed for the Israeli military, it’s designed for high-stress, rule-free environments. The techniques are simple, instinctive, and built to hold up when things go wrong fast.
You can read more about the system here and our training philosophy here.
“I’ve trained at a few clubs before, but nothing compares to the mix of physical training, tactical education, and the sense of community here.” — Jordan Mock, Academy of Steel Head Instructor

Krav Maga isn’t about being aggressive. It’s about being capable. The goal isn’t to fight—it’s to know you can handle it if you have to.
