Head Coach Jim Halton:
I started training in martial arts in the mid 80’s and have trained and competed in
many different combat sports and martial arts through the years such as Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Western Boxing, Filipino boxing, Jeet Kune Do, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Submission Wrestling, Krav Maga and Korean Kickboxing. I really started taking martial arts seriously in 2002 and looked to compliment my training with studying sports science, criminology and power and strength conditioning which could help supplement my overall knowledge. My aim was to become as strong a student and a coach of the martial arts as possible. I also qualified as a professional VIP Close Protection Operative and worked as a doorman so that I could get first hand experience outside of the ring of the true nature of violence on the streets. In 2008 I registered as a coach in Shaolin Kung Fu with the British Chinese Council of Martial Arts. In 2010 after intensive training in Krav Maga I became one of the British Krav Maga AssociationsOfficial schools and opened the Bristol Titans Krav Maga Academy. I am also a coach in several other systems and I do continue to train daily to improve my skills as a martial artist and a coach.
For me, in all that I have trained in and this lifelong commitment that I made to the martial arts, Krav Maga is by far the most effective and complete systems I have come across. There is a reason why Krav Maga is used by the Israeli Defence Forces and has been for the last 70 years. It works. And it works really well under pressure, in fact the harder the pressure the better Krav Maga works. In our British Krav Maga classes we are able to fully focus on a field stripped martial art, taking away the traditional elements and the fancy techniques and focus not only on the high percentage techniques but we can work on the attacks which are the most likely. Krav Maga literally translates to Contact Combat and as such we pressure test everything and spar every session, both stand up and on the ground – something that I have found works really well to prepare the student for the reality of a real life attack, only through contact does the student gain actual confidence in a technique.

My martial arts journey started around the age of 6, at a local Karate club, while I enjoyed it for a time the traditional aspect wasn’t for me and I soon got bored of various katas and drilling punches from the waist, I moved onto freestyle kickboxing obtaining my orange belt then moving onto traditional boxing in a sweat and saw dust club, I competed at amateur level for a few years and moved back into Korean kickboxing where I obtained my blackbelt, again seeking to do something a little less traditional, I tried MMA for a while again competing at amateur level,.
After this I had a bit of a break still dipping in and out of the local boxing club and a bit of Thai boxing. I missed regularly training so after a conversation with a friend who mentioned Krav Maga I thought I’d give it a try. After some digging I found Bristol Titans were very local to me so I went along for a taster session. We’ll let’s just say I was hooked immediately. The first thing I observed was how friendly everyone was, it can be daunting joining a new club and some more experienced students can seem intimidating however there was none of this here, everyone got on and everyone wanted to help each other get better.
The training is tough and pushes you out your comfort zone however lifes tough and a fight on the street is going to be even worse, Jim the instructor prepares you the best he can for this with a no BS approach, Jim is a martial arts veteran with a wealth of experience and it shows, quite often instructors become instructors and their own training declines, this is certainly not the case with Jim, it’s very apparent he still takes time out to improve all aspects of his fight game so he can bring more to the table at class, I’m still learning from him now despite my own 27years of training. His presence in class provides a comfortable, safe and informative trading environment where you feel confident in asking questions and for support.
Krav maga and the Bristol titans for me is the premier training facility in Bristol for reality based combat…. Hands down.
I came to my first Krav Maga lesson having never done any martial arts in my life. I was bored of working out by myself in the gym and looking for a new challenge. That was in 2011. Krav has increased my confidence, my fitness, I’m surrounded by motivating people and I’ve made a good group of mates…I’ve also learned a load of practical skills to help keep myself and my loved ones safe. I’m currently working towards my P7 grade and qualified as an assistant instructor in 2018.
